The first step in troubleshooting problems is to see what the car thinks is wrong. On OBD-I cars, this is a simple matter and involves a couple of minutes with a paper clip. With OBD-II cars, this involves getting some sort of computerized gadget to plug in to the car's OBD-II DLC port. A good tool for this is RossTech's VAG-COM software.
