    • What are the different supplemental restraint systems used in 12v models?
Audi models produced before October 1992 are equipped with the 1st generation airbag system with a driver's side airbag only, referred to as 'Airbag I.' It has no global OnBoard Diagnostic capability, and cannot be diagnosed using the VAG 1551 scan tool. All testing of the 'Airbag I' system must be performed with the VAG 1619 scan tool.
An airbag information label is located on the passenger side sun visor.

The 'Airbag II' system was introduced in October 1992. Vehicles produced from October 1992 to July 1993 are equipped with a driver's side airbag. Vehicles produced after July 1993 are equipped with both driver's and passenger's side airbags. Both systems include global OBD capability with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, and can be checked using the VAG 1551 scan tool. All testing of the 'Airbag II' system must be performed with the VAG 1551 scan tool, not the VAG 1619 scan tool used with the 'Airbag I' system.
For 1993 models, an airbag information label is located on the passenger side sun visor.
For 1994 models, the label is on the driver's side door jamb (B-pillar).

The 'Airbag III' system, introduced for the 1995 model year, features an airbag control module with expanded OBD capability, an extended expiration date for airbag units, an optimized passenger side airbag, and a pyrotechnic seatbelt tensioning system (replacing the cable-activated system of earlier models). This system can be fitted in the optional sport steering wheel (earlier Airbag systems could not). All testing of the 'Airbag III' system is performed with the VAG 1551 scan tool.
An airbag information label is located on the driver's side door jamb (B-pillar).
The expiration date for all airbag units was increased to 15 years in 1995; this new date applies to all previously made airbag systems. Ask your dealer for more information on the expiration date of your airbag system.
