How it Works
Not being able to find things in the engine bay of your car can make the repair process a
baffling ordeal. Audi didn't help this any when they decided to cover everything in plastic.
To alleviate this problem, I've collected some illustrations of the engine and engine bay, as
well as some other helpful
illustrations like belt routings.
Before we get to the pictures, I want to point out that this is not meant to replace repair
procedures, it's not meant to be an exhaustive reference, and it may not be 100% accurate. Each
model had a slightly different engine bay; some differences are small enough to ignore, but
others are not. If you see something in an illustration that looks radically different than
your engine bay, do not fret -- that's perfectly normal.

Updated belt routing |

With the updated belt routing, the large idler pulley next to the
crankshaft pulley is omitted. Also, the spring loaded automatic tensioner
is different for the two belt routings, so you want to be sure of what
you've got. If in doubt, get the updated tensioner and a new belt; that
is all you need to convert to the new belt routing. |
