January 8, 2000 update: Alas, the folks at A.M.S. didn't seem all that
interested in selling the exhaust manifolds for their 16V turbo kit separately and since,
as I mentioned previously, the complete kit costs a whopping $6,000 and I'd need to buy
two of them, that, my friends, is that ... for now, anyway. :^ Yesterday, while I was browsing through the newsstand of the
local Barnes & Noble, I read a blurb in the latest issue of Grassroots
Motorsports magazine about the new "Street Mod" class for the
SCCA's Solo II and Pro Solo programs. In fact, the class is officially called Street Modified and the bottom-line
is that most of the modifications people make to their cars -- including engine swaps, so
long as it's made by the same manufacturer as the chassis and displaces less than 6.0
liters in naturally aspirated form or 4.0 liters if turbocharged -- are allowed. At first glance, it appears the rules could have been written specifically for me. Although I really hadn't considered the idea of competing with this car and was rather looking forward to building it without ever opening a rulebook, this class seems quite promising and when it comes to things like this, I'm rather weak-willed, even if my track record at actually finishing projects isn't a very good one ... stay tuned |
