Porsche 968 - 01E 6 Speed Transmission

Top of Audi pages

The Porsche 968 has a version of the 2WD 01E transmission.
It looks like there might be some of the parts that would
interchange, if you were so inclined.

The 968 has this transmission in the rear of the car driving
the rear wheels, with a long torque tube affair connecting it
to the engine way up in the front. Interesting differentials
listed are:

950.332.053.00 40% ZF Limited Slip Differential
        950.332.063.00 Torsen Differential

So if anybody has been looking for a front differential,
in an excess of something-or-other, here's your chance!
Before you spend money on this, check the ID/OD of differential
carrier side bearings to make sure this will interchange.

I think the only gears that would interchange are 5th and 6th.
The 2WD and Quattro version 01E transmissions should be able to
interchange 5th and 6th gears, which offers some possibility
for different ratios.

The 968 2WD has these ratios:

5th: 0.912 31/34 Standard ratio
        1.04 24/25 Special order ratio

6th: 0.778 28/36 Standard ratio
        0.89 28/25 Special order ratio

These will not help much with the standard Audi 01E Quattro
ratios for 3rd and 4th gear.

Porsche 01E detailed pictures and descriptions of major differences.

A NOTE FOR PORSCHE 968 OWNERS:

I've found that Porsche no longer stocks the 1/2 shift operating sleeve
for the 968 transmission. Since this is a part that fails, this leaves
the 968 owner needing to replace the entire transmission when this part
fails! Porsche no longer even lists a part number for this piece.

It turns out that the 2WD version of the Audi 01E transmission uses the same part, and Audi has the part number listed. The part number you need is 01E 311 239 E - this is the 1/2 shift hub and operating sleeve. This is an Audi part for a 2WD 01E transmission, which was used in the European 2WD V8's and 2WD European A8's. 2WD A8s with a V6 were produced at least though 2002. Also check as A4 2WD 6 speeds may still be in production. I checked with the large Porsche & Audi dealer here in Columbus, they say this is a good part number but they can't order it, 2WD V8 powered cars were never imported into North America. You will have to get someone in Germany to order it for you. For interest, the Porsche 968 and Audi V8/A8 2WD 6 speed transmissions use the same part numbers for these parts: 1st syncronizer band 2nd syncronizer band 1st gear needle bearing & needle bearing hub 3/4 shift hub 5/6 shift hub Based on that, I think the 01E 311 239 E Audi part is the right part for the Porsche 968 transmission 1/2 shift hub and operating sleeve.
