Note how splines go clear to end of main shaft. In the 968 the drive shaft comes back through the torque tube, and the rear end of the drive shaft is internally splined and fits over this splined end of the input shaft, where it is clamped in place by a through bolt. The through bolt fits in the groove in the middle of the splined area.
