Initial tool list for manifold

Pic is of what I picked up today at Home Depot and the Harbor Freight store.

But before we get to that I need to tell the Dremel owners out there that there just doesn't exist the tools to do this job with a hand-held Dremel. There's no 1/4" shank arbors, bits, burrs, grinders or polishing cylinders that are gonna allow you to play along. You'll either HAVE to invest in a real die grinder or do a very VERY limited port/polish job.

Ok, the Home Depot items: 1 gal laquer thinner (or acetone) for cleaning up any oily residues and wipe-down before painting. I Qt Xylol/Xylene for brush clean-up when using the Glyptal. A 1" and a 1.5" "sash" brush (angled tip) made of white China natural bristle. Good brushes are imperative for a good finish. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE CHEAP, THROW-AWAY FOAM BRUSHES AS THEY WILL MELT AND MAKE A HUGE MESS. Also don't use synthetic bristle brushes as they could melt/disolve in Xylene-based paint as well. Natural China Brushes come in white or black bristles. It's easier to tell when they're clean if white is used. Total cost at Home Depot for everything, with tax: $26.17. Brushes were almost exactly half of that price ($5.96/$6.97).

Harbor Freight Item: A 10 piece rotary file, rasp and bur set, item# P1771. I'm not going to recommend you guys get carbide due to costs. And I'm not going to use my good carbide bur set on this manifold. At $2ea this set is "disposable" and cheap. But easily up to this task. Cost: $19.99 in the store or online. You can find these and similar sets at many many places online if you hate Harbor Freights shipping times and don't have a store near you.

Next items I'd recommend are online items. Most of these I already own so won't be buying them.

All are available from the Eastwood Company. I'll include a link at the end of the post.

1. Qt brush-on Glyptal #46001ZP $24.99 Note* this could be split between two people as 1 Qt would do 10 manifolds But DO NOT PURCHASE THE AEROSOL, SPRAY CAN OF GLYPTAL!! THE QUART HAS 50X AS MUCH PRODUCT IN IT AS THE AEROSOL. AND YOU CAN NEVER REUSE THE SPARY CAN ONCE THE MATERIAL HARDENS IN THE NOZZLE!! This is SERIOUS stuff and requires Xylol/Xylene for clean-up or thinning.

2. Grinders grease #13119 $4.99. Used to dab a little on your grinding tools and snadpaper spirals and cylinders to prevent aluminum from building up in it and prematurely rendering it useless. Good Stuff!! A must-have!

3. Engine Porting Kit: #46056 $24.99. This contains all the long-reach mandrels and sanding cylinders/tapers to smooth out the runner internals in our manifold. I don't know if there will be enough in this kit but extras can be purchsed in 10qty and 50qty if necessary. We'll know after one runner is completely done if there is sufficient quantity.

Total cost at Eastwood will be $55.00+ shipping. Free shipping if you're a member, $12.95 if you're not.

About the only thing left besides replacement gaskets for EVERYTHING mated to this manifold will be the flex-hones. And thats when the electric drill will be needed as well as they require an adjustable chuck rather than a collet set-up as found on die grinders. But their need is a good ways off (approx 2 months) and their cost will hover in the close-to but sub-$100 range for a good assortment.
