Audi S6 Seat Heater Diagnosis

Audi UrS6 seat heater failure diagnosis

The Question: > Any hints on how to isolate whether an S6 driver's side seat > heating element is bad? Fuse is ok. Switch lights up when on. > Anything else I should check before shelling out $$ for > a new element?
Assuming it's the same as the 94, which is probably pretty likely, here's the info. Locate the 6-pin green connector under the seat. Pin 1 is a blue/yellow wire that is the power feed from the controller in the dash. This connects to one side of the seat element. Pin 3 has a brown wire that connects one side of the backrest element to ground. Pins 5 and 6 are connected together by a brown/blue wire. Pin 5 is the other side of the seat element and pin 6 is the other side of the backrest element. The brown/blue wire connects them in series. To run a thorough check, make sure you've got +12 on pin 1 and +0 (ground) on pin 3. If that's ok, check the voltage at pins 5 and 6. If it's +12 the backrest is out, if it's +0 the seat is out, and if it's +6 everything is OK and you need to go back to square one. You can pull the plug and verify the resistance. I think a good element is between 1 and 2 ohms. Pins 1 and 5 are the seat, and 3 and 6 are the backrest. The switch lighting up means nothing. It's not associated with the wiring to the heater elements. I just got a seat element from Clair for $111 (list is $131). Trouble is I need the backrest so it will be going back and I'll get to find out how much the backrest costs. Wayne Dohnal
