Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, checking



First, disconnect the ECT sensor harness connector and check the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the sensor:
ECT sensor
  • At approximately 20oC coolant temperature, the resistance should be about 2.5k ohms.
  • At approximately 80oC coolant temperature, the resistance should be about 330 ohms.
If the specified values are not obtained, replace the sensor.
If the values are obtained but there is still a problem, check the resistance between the ECT sensor connector pin 2 and ground:

Specified value: no greater than 1 ohm.

Next check the wiring between the ECT sensor and the ECM: pin 1 of the ECT sensor connector should be connected to ECM connector C terminal 15:
